AMS Lite Not Loading Filament: Causes & Fixes
By Jules Carter
Last verified: · How we research
What our research found
- Bambu Lab's AMS lite FAQ lists Bambu PETG-CF as compatible with the AMS lite, while its filament guide table and the AMS lite store page list PETG-CF as not recommended. We flag the conflict instead of picking one.
- The single most common cause in the owner thread we read was not a fault at all: new owners pressed Load before inserting filament, or did not push the filament far enough for the feeder gears to grab it.
- One error message, three different meanings: Bambu Lab's wiki splits AMS lite loading failures into four on-screen messages, and the first fix differs for each. The table below maps message to first check.
How we chose
- Only causes that Bambu Lab's own wiki lists for AMS lite loading errors are included.
- Steps are ordered from no-tools checks to disassembly, so you try the least invasive fix first.
- Owner workarounds are included only when they appear in a public thread we can link to.
- Steps that require opening electrical parts are left to Bambu Lab support.

Symptoms
- The printer shows "Unable to feed filament into the extruder" during loading.
- The printer shows "Failed to extrude the filament" after the filament reaches the toolhead.
- Unloading fails with "Failed to pull out the filament from the toolhead".
- The Load / Unload buttons stay greyed out, or the AMS lite slot lights cycle as if every slot is empty.
Likely causes
- Filament is tangled or knotted on the spool.
- The PTFE path is too long, detached or sharply bent (the AMS lite's maximum feeding distance is 1.2 m).
- Filament diameter is too thin or the tip is worn, so the feeder gears slip.
- Broken filament or two filaments are stuck inside the AMS lite Filament Hub.
- The filament funnel unit's odometer or gears are jammed in one slot.
- The extruder filament sensor or its arm is not detecting filament (affects every slot).
- A nozzle or extruder clog stops the filament after it reaches the toolhead.
- The filament itself is not suited to the AMS lite (soft TPU, damp PVA, many fiber-filled filaments).
Fixes step by step
- Read the exact on-screen message — Bambu Lab's AMS lite troubleshooting page separates four messages: unable to feed into the extruder, failed to extrude, failed to pull out of the toolhead, and filament location not found. Use the table in this guide to jump to the matching first check.
- Insert the filament properly — Cut the filament tip at a sharp angle and push it into the slot until the feeder gears grab it. Owners in the Bambu Lab forum thread report that pressing Load first, or stopping when the filament meets resistance, is a frequent cause on new printers.
- Check the spool and the filament — Look for knots or snags on the spool. If the leading end is worn or flattened, cut it off. Bambu Lab's HMS guide gives 1.75 mm +/- 0.03 mm as the normal diameter range; replace filament that measures thinner.
- Check the PTFE tube path — Make sure each tube is seated at both ends, is not kinked or flattened, and that the total feeding path stays within the AMS lite's 1.2 m limit. If you moved an AMS lite from an A1 mini to an A1 (or the reverse), check the tube lengths listed in the AMS lite FAQ.
- Reset AMS options if loading is greyed out — An owner in the forum thread reported that turning off the AMS options in the printer's settings, re-inserting the filament and turning the options back on cleared a stuck slot. This is an owner workaround, not an official step.
- Clear the AMS lite Filament Hub — If filament reaches the hub but the toolhead never shows the green filament dot, eject all filaments, restart the printer and load one slot. If that fails, follow Bambu Lab's Filament Hub cleaning guide to push out broken pieces.
- Check the slot's funnel unit — If only one slot fails, pull filament back and forth in that slot and compare the resistance with the other slots. Bambu Lab recommends cleaning debris from the feeder gears and replacing the Filament Funnel Unit if the odometer is stuck or slipping.
- Rule out a nozzle or extruder clog — If the message is "Failed to extrude" and the extruder clicks, Bambu Lab's guide points to a nozzle or extruder clog and links to the A1 series unclogging and extruder cleaning guides.
When to replace parts
- Replace the Filament Funnel Unit when one slot's odometer is stuck, slips, or has clearly more resistance than the other slots (per Bambu Lab Wiki).
- Replace the AMS lite Filament Hub when its outlet is worn or chipped.
- Contact Bambu Lab support if every slot fails and the extruder filament sensor never detects filament after the hub has been cleared.

Research note: this guide is compiled from Bambu Lab’s official wiki and store pages, plus one public owner thread on the Bambu Lab forum. We do not test products ourselves; every step below links to where it comes from. See how we research.
Which message are you seeing?
Bambu Lab’s AMS lite loading and unloading troubleshooting page [1] splits failures by the message on the printer screen. Start with the row that matches yours.
| On-screen message | What it means (per Bambu Lab) | Check first |
|---|---|---|
| Unable to feed filament into the extruder | The extruder’s filament sensor never detects filament during feeding | Tangles, PTFE path length, broken filament in the hub |
| Failed to extrude the filament | Filament reached the toolhead but the extruder can’t grip and push it, or the slot’s odometer didn’t turn | Nozzle or extruder clog, then the slot’s odometer |
| Failed to pull out the filament from the toolhead | The toolhead sensor still detects filament after unloading | Broken filament in the hub, sensor base or extruder |
| The filament location in the toolhead was not found | Filament is in the toolhead but the printer can’t tell which slot it came from | Extruder clog or filament slipping in the toolhead |
If every slot fails, Bambu Lab says to check the extruder filament sensor and the AMS lite Filament Hub first. If only one slot fails, the wiki points to that slot’s funnel unit, odometer or gears.
Limits worth knowing before you troubleshoot
- Feeding distance: the AMS lite’s maximum effective feeding distance is 1.2 meters (Bambu Lab Wiki [1]). A longer or extended tube triggers the feed error.
- Tube lengths differ between printers: the AMS lite sold on its own ships with tubes sized for the A1 (730 mm x 2 and 850 mm x 2), while the A1 mini combo uses 580 mm x 2 and 700 mm x 2. Bambu Lab warns that tubes that are too long raise resistance and can cause false tangle alarms (AMS lite FAQ [4]).
- Spool size: spools must be 40–68 mm wide with a 53–58 mm inner diameter (AMS lite FAQ [4]).
- One unit per printer: A1 and A2 series printers connect to one AMS lite at most, and the AMS lite does not work with X, P or H2 series printers (Bambu Lab store [6]).
Is your filament the problem?
Some loading failures are really compatibility problems. According to Bambu Lab:
- TPU: TPU 95A, 85A, 83A and 80A cannot be used in the AMS lite; harder TPU (77D, 55D or above) can (AMS lite FAQ [4]).
- Fiber-filled filaments: third-party carbon-fiber and glass-fiber filaments are not recommended because they can break in the feeder channel or wear it; use the external spool holder instead (AMS lite FAQ [4]).
- Damp PVA and BVOH: listed as unsupported; dry PVA and BVOH are supported (Bambu Lab store [6]).
Conflicting official guidance on PETG-CF: the AMS lite FAQ [4] says Bambu PLA-CF and Bambu PETG-CF are compatible with the AMS lite. The filament guide table [5] and the AMS lite store page [6] list PETG-CF as not recommended for the AMS lite, and the filament guide explains that the AMS lite lacks the extra feeding gear the full AMS has. If PETG-CF keeps failing to load, feed it from the external spool holder.
What owners report
We read one public thread on the official forum, A1 AMS lite will not load filament [7] (20 posts on the first page, January to November 2024). That is a single thread, so treat it as examples, not a measure of how common each cause is:
- The original poster’s problem turned out to be loading order: they pressed Load before inserting filament. Another owner explained that the AMS lite pulls the filament in a short way on insertion and feeds it to the hotend when the slot is needed.
- Several owners said the filament stopped at a point of resistance that felt like the end, and they had to wiggle it and keep pushing until the gears caught it. One owner fixed it by cutting the tip at a 45-degree angle; another said a sharply angled tip guides the filament past the gear teeth.
- One owner cleared a stuck slot by turning off the AMS options in settings, re-inserting filament and turning them back on. Another owner thanked them and said it worked.
- One owner was sent a replacement main board by support, and it did not fix the issue. We include this only to show that board swaps are not a guaranteed fix.
How we chose these steps
Every cause and step on this page appears in either Bambu Lab’s wiki or the linked forum thread. We ordered them from checks that need no tools (message, insertion, spool, tube) to steps that need disassembly (hub, funnel unit, extruder). We left out procedures that involve the printer’s electronics; for those, Bambu Lab’s guides recommend opening a support ticket.
